BIG has been selected as winner of the invited competition by Finnish developers Rakennustomisto Pohjola & YH-Länsi, among proposals from Swedish Wingårdhs, German Behnisch Partner and Finnish JKMM, to design a master plan, comprising residential, commercial and cultural programme, forming a new urban area around the existing Ratina sports stadium in one of the most rapidly developing regions in Finland.

ARKIZ+ hiperstudio wins competition for a sustainable Hotel in Brazil
ARKIZ + hiperstudio have won a competition for a “sustainable hotel” for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, to be built in São Paulo.The project, which will be called “Hotel Aliah”, also includes a convention center and a sports center, and will be built in a location with easy access from two airports, Guarulhos and Viracopos.

Winners of Habitat Sostenible competition
Hugo Sebastián de Erice, Ricardo Sánchez and Sergio Artola have been the winners of the competition to design 100 social housing units in a new Eco-Neighbourhood located at the south of Madrid. The competition was promoted by EMVS (Madrid Municipal Housing and Land Company) and co-organized by Habitat Futura. The project promotes a building based on bioclimatic criteria where the different dwellings are protected by garden-terraces.

Woods Bagot wins China Southern Airport City Competition
Woods Bagot has won the competition to design a 988-acre (400-hectare) mixed-use development set on the Liuxi River in Guangzhou, China. The design expands the traditional corporate headquarters to an urban scale and will support China Southern Airlines’ brand to continue as Asia’s largest airline.

Atelier Thomas Pucher wins Salzburg Regional Hospital extension
Atelier Thomas Pucher won the first prize in the international competition for the new extension of the Salzburg regional Hospital.
The design combines a ‘double-comb’ structure that accommodates treatment and examinations rooms with a cross-shaped area dedicated for the ward and nursery departments.

‘The Kelpies’ design competition winner
Nicoll Russell Studios has won the competition to design a visitor centre as part of the £41 million Helix Project near Falkirk, Scotland. The practice will also deliver their designs for an internal public space located within a 30m high Kelpie head – a Scottish mythical water horse – created by famous sculptor, Andy Scott, in a move that will establish a dramatic, multi-sensory experience anticipated to generate significant levels of repeat visits.

HENN StudioB wins Nantong Sports Center
HENN StudioB, the design and research studio of Berlin-based Henn Architekten, has won the first prize in the invited international competition to design Nantong Sports Center in the southeast Jiangsu Province of China. Among the competition participants were also Hopkins Architects, Wuhan Architectural Design Institute, CCDI Shenzhen, Zhejiang University, and Tongji University.
